Why should sustainable packaging be important to both consumers and businesses? What are the long-term ramifications of using non-sustainable packaging? And what is considered to be the most sustainable option when it comes to packaging? We are going to answer all of these questions and more.
Sustainable packaging is, by definition, an eco-friendly, compostable, recyclable, and/or re-usable means of sealing a product for transportation purposes. And while there are numerous packaging options which fall under those categories, there is really only one which outperforms all the rest when it comes to sealing food... But we will get to that shortly.
So, why should sustainable packaging be important to both consumers and businesses alike? The reason we should care about it as both consumers and businesses, is because we all have a vested interest in doing so. I'm sure we can all agree that we want to continue living healthy and happy lives, and a way to ensure that for ourselves and for the generations to come, is to help protect the vitality of our environment. Sustainable packaging and plastic are not compatible. Roughly 14.5 million tons of plastic packaging is used every year for both food and general product packaging, a fair portion of which finds its way into our oceans, which of course creates a ripple effect leading into our drinking water, soil, and wildlife. Clearly, plastic is not a viable option when it comes to promoting life on our planet.
It is as important for businesses to focus on implementing environmentally friendly packaging over profit margins, as it is for consumers to research and support companies that do so. Because, after all, it’s the longevity of healthy life here on this planet which should take precedence above all else, shouldn’t it? We sure think so.
Now, while there are a great number of viable options in the realm of sustainable packaging, throughout all of our research, we couldn’t help but settle on one and one alone… glass! Glass is regarded as the most eco-friendly container there is. It is the most commonly re-used packaging due to its superior durability, and is infinitely recyclable, as it never declines in quality. From its manufacturing process to its longevity, recyclability, and wide ranges of use, glass truly has no contenders in the market of sustainability. Did you know that glass is the only FDA-approved packaging material for long-term food storage? Not to mention, there are no other sustainable products on the market which can guarantee the freshness of a food or beverage product quite the way that glass can. The only drawback being that costs are typically higher for glass products than the other competing sustainable and non-sustainable packaging methods. However, we like to think of it as an investment in the well-being of the world and all of its wonderful in habitants. Because, once again, that is what truly matters.
